Redland City Marina is more than just a place to recoup – it’s a gathering point for wanderers, and a hub for those who crave the untamed freedom of the sea. This shift has never been more evident as we witness a growing movement – more and more people are casting off the lines of conventional living and embracing life afloat and swapping landlocked routines for a life of exploration.
At the marina, we have a front-row seat to this transformation. For us, it’s an incredible privilege to stand at the heart of these journeys, providing a place where preparations are made, friendships are forged, and adventures begin.
So what’s behind the growing appeal of life on the water, and why do we in the marine community call it The Dream? At Redland City Marina, we wanted to dive deeper into this lifestyle shift, so we spoke with past and present customers to uncover what makes this way of life so irresistible.
Jon and Janelle, 2001 36ft Easy Catamaran “Mallana”
For this adventurous family, life on the water was a natural choice. Drawn to the freedom of travel and love for the ocean it felt only right to raise their children surrounded by nature.
While they had some sailing experience, transitioning to full-time life aboard their boat was a challenge, however one they tackled together. Their children, having known nothing else, thrive in a world of ever-changing horizons, where each day brings new discoveries. Of course, there are difficulties like juggling parenting with the demands of boat life, unexpected repairs, and unpredictable weather – but they’ve adapted, finding their balance.
Through it all, the cruising community has been a source of friendship and support, with fellow sailors always ready to lend a hand. Their time at Redland City Marina, tackling major boat work for the first time, was one of their toughest challenges. Yet, despite the maintenance, logistics, and constant problem-solving, they wouldn’t trade this life for anything. Their advice? Don’t wait – just go. The freedom and memories are worth it.
Dean and Ro “Sailing Marilyn Kaye “, 43ft Roberts Mauritius GRP Yacht
For Dean and Ro, life on the water is a balance of adventure, serenity, and shared dreams. Dean has always been drawn to the sea, first through swimming and sailing in his youth, then by joining the Navy at just 15. The ocean offers him a deep sense of calm, freedom, and escape.
While Ro loves their time at anchor, she’s less fond of long transits, but she does it for him, something he’s endlessly grateful for.
Their journey truly began when Ro found their current yacht 43ft Roberts Mauritius GRP. After a year of hard work at Redland City Marina, they relaunched their new home and never looked back.
At anchor, their days are filled with walks, snorkelling, paddleboarding, reading and fishing. One of the greatest joys of this lifestyle is the sailing community—a network of generous, like-minded people always ready to share knowledge.
For empty nesters considering this lifestyle, their advice is clear: if it’s your dream, pursue it. It’s not for everyone, but you’ll know soon enough. Plan thoughtfully, assess finances, safety, and experience, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. After all, in this life, nothing is set in stone – only in the sand below the high tide mark.
Connor, 22 38ft Steel Roberts “Halcyon Quest”
For Connor, the ocean’s call had always been a distant hum, growing louder over time. His sailing journey began at 13 when he saved for his first boat, a Hobie 14. Yet, it wasn’t until October 2024, that the dream of living aboard became real. When a 38ft Steel Ketch appeared at auction, he didn’t hesitate to seize the opportunity.
The shift to boat life has been far from routine, but that suits Connor perfectly. The sense of adventure and the camaraderie among fellow sailors have been some of the most rewarding parts, with experienced cruisers always ready to share advice or stories.
This year, Redland City Marina became his trusted guide, providing the resources and expertise he needed throughout his journey. Reflecting on the experience, he’s thankful for the skilled tradespeople, helpful staff, and the supportive yachtie community that made his refit a reality.
To young people considering this lifestyle, Connor’s advice is simple: Just go for it. Experience comes from doing and help is always just around the corner.
Dan, 2008 Fusion 40 Catamaran “Jamesby”
Dan Parker never imagined he’d become a sailor. In his twenties, travel was his passion, but the sea? That was someone else’s dream – until a random sailing course flipped his world. His first real adventure followed soon after, crewing a Northman Que monohull to Gladstone. When he returned to shore, something inside him shifted.
“Stuff it,” he thought. “I’m building my own boat.”
Dan chose a Crowther Spindrift 40 design and built one that was truly his, crafted by his own hands, shaped by his own will. He called her “Mistweaver”.
But the lesson didn’t stick. Recently, Dan purchased “Jamesby”, a 2008 Fusion 40 Catamaran, Now, at Redland City Marina, he’s taking on the challenge of refurbishing her.
Dan has found more than just a passion – he has built a life. One shaped by the unpredictable, by wind and waves, by patience and perseverance. And for anyone dreaming of the same path, his advice is simple: expect the unexpected, embrace the struggle, and set sail. The rewards will carry you farther than you ever imagined.
Living on the water is more than just a lifestyle. At its heart are the bonds forged within a tight-knit cruising community, personal growth, and the freedom to explore endless horizons. While challenges like maintenance and unpredictable weather persist, the rewards are found in the profound sense of fulfilment that accompanies life shaped by the ocean.
At Redland City Marina, we take pride in being part of these journeys. Every piece of equipment we provide and every service we offer plays a role in someone’s adventure. As more people answer the ocean’s call, we are reminded that true adventure lies not in the distance travelled, but in the experiences lived. Whether it’s a solo voyage, a young sailor chasing freedom, a family’s floating classroom, or a couple’s golden-age escapade, we are honoured to support these stories. The sea beckons, and for those who listen, it offers a life like no other.
